He was born to a family of modest means, the son of Shaileshkumar Pragjibhai Godhani, a catering business owner, in Surat, Gujarat. Harmeet was greatly inspired by his father, who was an entrepreneur, and by his early introduction to the business world. At the age of 15, he was faced with a critical situation in the streets of Surat when an ambulance was obstructed by a car that was parked illegally.
